Troels Grum-Schwensen, a seasoned architect and designer, has been exploring the concept of gravity-locked furniture for over 15 years. His philosophy revolves around creating adaptable and flexible furniture pieces that can be easily modified without the use of tools. The Ponto table, inspired by a previous design of his, is a testament to this philosophy.
The Ponto table is a unique blend of aluminium and solid wood. The supporting beam is made of aluminium, while the legs are crafted from solid wood. The upper end of the legs features a 'negative print' of the extruded beam-profile, allowing the legs to be slid onto the beam and positioned as desired. Once the table is standing, gravity locks the legs in place, providing stability to the entire structure.
What sets the Ponto table apart from other furniture designs is its adaptability. The freedom in leg positioning allows for customization in shape and size, enabling exceptionally long spans between legs and overhangs. This innovative design also allows for easy exchange of legs and separation of materials after the table's lifespan.
The Ponto table is produced using specially designed extruded aluminium profiles for the load-bearing beams and milled solid wood for the legs. The table offers a wide range of standard dimensions, but its construction allows for a high degree of customization in lengths and widths.
Grum-Schwensen's design journey with the Ponto table began with a sketch in 2005, followed by revised drawings in 2018. The product was developed in collaboration with LAMMHULTS and launched at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair in Stockholm in February 2019. This design is a testament to Grum-Schwensen's commitment to creating adaptable furniture that complements architectural spaces.
The Ponto table is not just a piece of furniture; it's a design revolution that challenges the traditional concept of a table. With its innovative construction and adaptability, it offers a fresh perspective on furniture design, earning it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021.
